First sign? A handwritten note stuck to the side of a packing list. It read: 'Need concave lens focal point diagram before install.'
That was not normal. Most replacement orders for a rectangle chandelier go the other way: 'Where's the mounting bracket?' or 'Can we get more chain?' But a contractor asking for an optical diagram? That gets my attention.
I'm the quality and brand compliance manager at focal-point, a commercial lighting company. I review every fixture before it reaches customers—roughly 200+ unique fixtures a year. In 2024, I rejected 11% of first deliveries because specs didn't match approval samples or the install docs were incomplete. I do not mean to sound like the police of lighting. But if a fixture leaves our dock with the wrong information, the person installing it has to make decisions I should have already made.
The order
The order in question was for a private dining courtyard attached to a boutique hotel. It included a 60-inch rectangle chandelier with a brass frame and smoked glass. The customer also ordered an outside chandelier for the covered entry canopy—a smaller, damp-rated lantern.
At first glance, the rectangle chandelier seemed straightforward. It uses integrated LEDs behind a custom lens system. Not a single replaceable bulb. The spec sheet said the beam spread was 38°, but the sheet didn't explain why.
When I first started reviewing outdoor fixtures four years ago, I assumed 'outside chandelier' was one category. I was wrong. The difference between a damp-location and wet-location fixture matters. A covered patio is damp. A fully exposed balcony is wet. This customer's entry canopy was damp. The rectangle chandelier over the dining table was also in a covered courtyard, so we could use the decorative fixture—provided we read the lens specs and kept the light control in mind.
The diagram that almost didn't ship
The handwritten note was from the electrical contractor. He'd seen the phrase 'concave lens focal point diagram' in one of our photometric reports and wanted it in his hand before mounting. I had to ask the engineering team to dig out the file. It should have been attached to the product page from day one.
Here's what the diagram shows: the focal point of a concave lens is virtual. That means it sits on the same side of the lens as the incoming light. When parallel rays hit the lens, they diverge as if they came from that point. In a fixture like this, the result matters more than the name—light spreads after passing through the lens, and the beam angle tells you how quickly that spread happens.
In practice, the diagram answered a mounting question: at a typical mounting height, a 38° beam opens to a pool roughly two-thirds of the distance from the fixture to the floor. At 8 feet, that's about 5.5 feet across. At 10 feet, it's about 6.9 feet. That was enough to tell the contractor where the rectangle chandelier needed to hang and how far it could move without the light pool hitting the wrong spot.
I never expected a contractor to ask for it. Turns out he'd been burned before by a fixture that looked great in photos but created a narrow, dim patch on the table. The surprise wasn't the lens. It was that nobody in the chain—including our sales team—had mentioned it.
When the ceiling hook becomes the spec

The first submittal came back with a ceiling fan box rated for 50 lbs. It looked fine on paper. The fixture was 42 lbs. A ceiling fan box might hold it, but a fine-looking rectangle chandelier with a long swinging arm can create side loads. I didn't like it. I called the GC and asked for the framing photos. That's when we found the real situation: the drywall ceiling had a 14-inch plenum above it, and the contractor had planned to screw into the drywall with hollow anchors. So glad I double-checked that box. Almost let it go because we were already two weeks behind after a brass finish issue. One approval later, and the fixture would have been swaying like a pendulum every time someone closed the courtyard gate. We would've been on-site for a $22,000 fix.
How we swagged it the right way
We ended up shipping a custom swag kit with the fixture. Here's the approach we used, not just the hardware.
- Find a structural anchor point. The hook must land directly above the center of the table. Not where the junction box is. In this case, we cut a small access hole, added a 2x6 blocking between the joists, then attached a 100-lb-rated swag hook.
- Route the cable without tension. The power cable came from the junction box, ran across the ceiling in a discreet path, and entered a strain-relief fitting at the back of the canopy. We used cable clips every 12 inches so it wouldn't droop.
- Keep the fixture level. A rectangle chandelier will show a 1/4-inch tilt instantly. We installed a micro-adjustable cable stop above the canopy so the installer could level it with a hex wrench.
- Check the beam math after hanging. We asked the contractor to measure from the bottom of the fixture to the table, not from the ceiling. At 30 inches from the tabletop, the lens spread meant the table surface was lit without throwing glare at the guests' faces.
Is this the right solution for every outside chandelier? No. And I'd rather say that now than after you've bought a box of parts.
The swag method works well for a damp, protected area with a stable ceiling structure and no wind load. But if you're in a coastal area, or your chandelier is truly exposed to rain and salt air, a swagged fixture is probably the wrong choice. The exposed cable and the open connection point create too many ways for moisture to get in. In that case, you're better off putting the junction box in the right location and using a rigid stem. This solution works for maybe 80% of covered courtyard projects. Here's how to know if you're in the other 20%: if you can feel wind when you stand under the canopy, or if the ceiling is a finished surface with no access to structure, don't swag it. Move the box.
We also had to clean up our product language. Our spec sheet originally said 'outdoor rated.' Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), claims have to be substantiated. 'Outdoor' doesn't equal 'wet'; a damp-rated fixture is not the same as a wet-rated fixture. We changed the label to 'Damp Location Listed' and added the IP rating. It was a small correction, but it prevents a customer from putting a covered-porch fixture in an open garden and blaming us in six months.
What I learned from a piece of paper
A concave lens focal point diagram is not a decoration. It's a spec that tells you how light will behave in your room. The next time you see a photometric report attached to a chandelier, don't skip it. Even a decorative rectangle chandelier is an optical instrument. It just has nicer clothes than a lab setup.
