Here’s the opinion I rarely get to say out loud in a procurement meeting: the cheapest quote is usually the most expensive product you will ever install. The Alondra chandelier, an ellipsoidal spotlight, and one idea
The lobby proposal from focal-point included two very different fixtures, and together they made the same point.
The centerpiece is the Alondra chandelier. It’s a decorative piece over the reception seating area—the visual focal point of the room, in the design sense. But it also works as a light fixture. It gives a warm, even glow without hot spots or harsh shadows. A chandelier shouldn’t just hang there. It should do its job, too.
For the feature wall, we specified an ellipsoidal spotlight. If you aren’t familiar with the term, it’s a fixture with a reflector and lens that concentrate light into a tight, aimable beam. We used it to highlight a large piece of artwork without washing light across the entire wall. That’s where precision optics earn their keep: the light stops where you want it to stop.
The contrast between the two projects was stark. The 2024 conference floor needed extra fixtures, extra labor, and a service call to solve problems that should have been designed out. The 2025 lobby needed exactly what was specified—no more, no less.
My total cost of ownership checklist
I don’t think of these as lighting lessons anymore. I think of them as purchasing lessons that happen to be about lighting. Now when a quote lands on my desk, I run it through a simple total cost of ownership (TCO) checklist:
- Light distribution. Does the fixture put light where people need it? Ask for photometric data. If a vendor can’t provide it, treat that as a warning.
- Installation and maintenance. Does the fixture use standard components? Can a regular maintenance person replace the driver, or does it require proprietary parts and a service call?
- Warranty logistics. Who pays return shipping? How long does a claim take? A five-year warranty is close to worthless if the replacement process takes six weeks.
- Energy, in context. Efficient LEDs matter, but an efficient fixture that creates glare or dark corners isn’t saving anything.
And if a vendor claims a product will cut your energy bill by a specific percentage, ask for the test report. I’m quoting them because asking for evidence is the fastest way to see which vendors can actually back up their numbers.
What I’d say to someone still tempted by the low bid
I’ve heard the objection, because I used to make it myself: “We don’t have the budget for premium fixtures.” I understand. Budgets are real. But a lighting project isn’t finished when the purchase order is signed. It’s finished when the fixtures are installed, working, and maintainable for years.
If the budget is genuinely tight, here’s my advice: buy fewer fixtures with better optics rather than more fixtures with sloppy optics. Light the tasks and paths that matter. Phase the rest. That’s not a luxury approach; it’s a total cost approach. The glare complaints, the extra fixtures, and the service calls from the cheapest option will cost more than the fixtures themselves.
