A Contractor's Checklist: Focal-Point Fixtures, Convex Lens Focal Point, and LED Strip Placement

I've handled commercial and hospitality lighting orders for nine years. I've personally made 14 significant mistakes—or rather, 14 that I documented. There were probably more. Together they cost roughly $8,600 in wasted budget. That's not counting the embarrassment.

This checklist started as a sticky note after a $1,850 lens debacle. Now it's the sheet I run before every order. It applies to contractors, facilities managers, and owners who want to avoid the same traps. I once lit a consultation area with product spots. The client looked like they were being interrogated. We swapped the lenses to a wider angle, and the difference was immediate. Same fixture, same color temperature, just a different focal point.

The lesson applies beyond stages. A retail changing room needs people-friendly light, not product light. A conference room needs people-friendly light. If your design is built to spotlight actors, always ask who the 'actor' is and what face will be under that beam.

Notes from the trenches

People assume that 'premium' means 'bright'. What they don't see is the optical control, the color consistency, and the way the light makes materials look. That's the quality perception problem.
