Focal Point Lighting: LED Downlights vs. a Choros Chandelier — An Office Buyer's Honest Breakdown

Why this comparison instead of a product spec

When our 200-person engineering firm planned the 2024 headquarters renovation, the lighting discussion came down to two directions: rows of uniform LED downlights or one dramatic architectural fixture. Our purchasing team didn't need another spec sheet. We needed a comparison that looked at real-world trade-offs.

I'm the office administrator responsible for facilities purchasing—roughly $90k a year across eight vendor categories. I report to operations and finance, which means I get asked about both aesthetics and payback. This piece is written from that vantage point: not as an engineer, but as someone who has ordered, installed, and replaced commercial lighting.

1. Optics and light distribution

Where is the focal point for a concave lens located? For a concave lens, the focal point is on the same side as the incoming light. The lens causes parallel rays to diverge, and the focal point is the virtual point they appear to come from. In spec sheets, that's why the focal length is negative.

Convex lens object inside focal point: a quick explanation. If a convex lens object is inside the focal point, the image is enlarged, upright, and virtual. That's the classic magnifying glass effect. In lighting design, the same geometry is used when you want to spread light or create a soft-edged beam without extra diffusion.

Now here's the practical comparison:

  • LED downlight: A well-designed downlight uses a reflector or lens to control the beam. You get a predictable cone of light with low glare. According to the IES Lighting Handbook, open office task lighting typically falls in the 30–50 foot-candle range. A downlight layout can hit that level without lighting up the ceiling plane.
  • Choros chandelier: The Choros chandelier is more about ambient and accent light than task illumination. Its optical structure creates a focal point in the architecture, but it shouldn't be counted on for desk-level foot-candles. It's a supplement, not a primary work light.

Verdict: For task lighting, downlights win. For making light itself part of the design, the chandelier wins. They don't really compete—which is why I ended up specifying both.

2. Visual role: what the ceiling should say

This is where the comparison stops being technical. A ceiling full of downlights is supposed to disappear. The Choros chandelier is the opposite—it's meant to be seen.

Our lobby gets used by clients, vendors, and employees every day. The chandelier changed how the room feels. There's something satisfying about walking in and seeing the fixture exactly where it should be. After the tension of installation—and the ceiling reinforcement—that payoff matters.

But you pay for that payoff in physical presence. A downlight is a 4-inch hole in the ceiling. The Choros is a sculptural object. If your ceiling is under 9 feet, the chandelier may dominate the room in a bad way. If your room is oversized, it may look undersized.

Verdict: Chandelier wins where a visual anchor is wanted. Downlights win where the architecture should stay neutral. Our open office got downlights. Our lobby got the Choros.

3. Cost and maintenance: the counterintuitive part

Upfront, LED downlights are obviously cheaper. As of March 2025, mid-grade commercial downlight LED fixtures we've quoted ran from $28 to $75 each. A Choros chandelier quote was a different conversation entirely—roughly $4,200 for the configuration we specified in 2024. Prices vary; verify current quotes.

But maintenance is where my expectation flipped. With 28 downlights in the ceiling, you have 28 drivers and 28 potential failure points. When one driver failed in a conference room in 2023, we had to cut open the ceiling to replace it. (Should mention: the downlights I chose weren't rated for direct insulation contact, which is on me. The newer IC-rated ones are easier.)

The Choros chandelier, in contrast, has one driver and a more accessible service path. If it fails, the electrician can usually reach it with a ladder. I'm not saying the chandelier is maintenance-free—nothing is. But for a single-statement fixture, the maintenance burden has been lower than I expected.

Verdict: Downlights win on first cost. Chandelier can win on maintenance simplicity if you would otherwise be maintaining dozens of fixtures with scattered drivers.

4. Installation and wiring

Installation is where budget overruns happen. LED downlights require holes, spacing calculations, and a ceiling plenum that can accommodate the housing. The Choros requires structural support and a secure mounting point. Neither is a Friday-afternoon DIY project.

Before doing anything electrical, turn off the breaker and test the circuit with a voltage tester. This is not optional.

How to wire a new light fixture (basic steps)

  1. Turn off power and verify it's off.
  2. Connect the bare copper ground wire to the green screw or ground wire in the ceiling box.
  3. Connect white wires to white wires. Actually, label them first—this is the step I skipped once because I assumed all white wires were neutral. They weren't. The fixture shorted. $400 mistake.
  4. Connect black wires to black wires, or to the switched hot if you're replacing a fixture with a wall switch.
  5. Secure all connections with approved wire nuts, push the wires into the box, and attach the bracket.
  6. Mount the fixture, restore power, and test.

The downlight install is simpler per fixture, but multiply it by 28. The chandelier install is one fixture, but it often requires scaffolding and ceiling reinforcement. In our 2024 project, the Choros install cost more in labor because of the structural work, not the wiring itself.

Verdict: If you have a standard drywall ceiling that's already opened up, downlights are easier. If you're installing a single decorative fixture in a lobby with exposed or high ceiling framing, the chandelier's labor cost may not be as bad as you think—but always get an electrician's quote first.

5. Flexibility and lighting control

Downlights offer something the chandelier can't: zone-by-zone control. With today's smart controls, you can dim rows near the windows, change scene presets, and connect to occupancy sensors. For a commercial building chasing energy code compliance, that's a real advantage.

The Choros can be dimmed too, but it's a single fixture. It will do what the dimmer tells it to do, but it isn't going to adjust daylight harvesting by individual zones. If that's a requirement—and for many of our floor areas it is—the downlights handle it better.

Verdict: Downlights win for flexibility and code compliance. Chandelier wins for simple drama.

So which one should you choose?

I know you came for an answer, so here it is, with a caveat. My experience is based on about 30 commercial office and light-industrial projects, mostly mid-range budget. If you're working on a boutique hotel, a museum, or a retail flagship, this advice may not fit—your priorities are different.

  • Choose LED downlights if you have a standard ceiling grid or open office, need uniform task illumination, want flexible zone controls, or need to control first cost.
  • Choose the Choros chandelier if you have a lobby, reception area, executive space, or other public zone where a visual anchor matters more than photometric uniformity. It works best with a ceiling height of at least 10–12 feet and when the task lighting is handled separately.
  • Choose both if your budget and ceiling allow. That's what we did. The downlights do the work; the chandelier does the talking.

One last thing: the 'focal point' in the brand name is not just a metaphor. For a concave lens, the focal point is on the incoming side. For a convex lens with an object inside the focal point, you get magnification. Focal Point's fixtures are designed around that kind of precision.
