If you're planning a commercial lighting upgrade—or just trying to keep an existing one from turning into a maintenance money pit—there are five questions I've answered more times than I can count. What Is the Focal Point of a Lens and Why Does It Matter for Commercial Lighting?

That sounds like a physics textbook, but the concept drives a lot of what you pay for in a lighting fixture. The focal point's position relative to the LED chip determines the beam angle. Why should a budget-focused buyer care? Because beam spread determines fixture count. Are Modern Chandeliers Worth the Investment for Commercial Spaces?

  • A driver that's actually accessible. The driver is the component most likely to fail. If a technician has to disassemble the fixture to reach it, labor eats up your savings.
  • UL/ETL listing. Non-listed fixtures create insurance and building code issues. Check before you specify, not after.
  • Service documentation. We got burned once on a 'designer' fixture that required the manufacturer's authorized technician to change a burned-out module. The service call cost more than the fixture. If the vendor can't provide service documentation up front, that's a red flag.

My experience here covers hospitality and office lobbies. I can't speak to how chandeliers perform in industrial or healthcare settings—different priorities entirely. But for spaces where guests or clients gather, the marketing value is real.

How to Change a Light Bulb in a Hanging Globe Fixture

This question gets asked by property managers and maintenance teams constantly. The process isn't difficult, but doing it wrong gets expensive fast.

Turn off power at the circuit breaker. Not just the wall switch—the breaker. If the fixture is wired incorrectly, or shares a circuit, the switch might not disconnect everything. It took one incident with a backward-wired switch leg to make this a permanent rule for our team.

Wait for the glass to cool. Ten minutes is usually enough. Hot glass meeting cold skin is a recipe for a burn, or a dropped globe.

Identify the globe attachment. Most hanging globe fixtures use one of three designs:

  • Threaded collar: A metal ring around the rod. Turn it counterclockwise, and support the glass globe as you lower it.
  • Clip arms: Three small clips hold the globe against the fixture. Push the clips inward slightly and rotate the globe to release it.
  • Rod-and-finial: A center rod passes through the whole globe, with a decorative finial nut at the bottom. Unscrew the finial and slide the globe straight down.

Support the globe while releasing it. I know this sounds like obvious advice, but our team has broken three globe covers in the past two years. Cheapest replacement was $45. Most expensive was $230, not counting the rush shipping.

Install the correct bulb. Check the socket label for max wattage. Modern fixtures almost always take an LED with E26 or GU10 base. And match the color temperature of the room—dropping a 5000K bulb into a 3000K space drives everyone slightly crazy.

Reattach gently. Collar finger-tight. Clips fully seated. If something doesn't line up, stop and inspect rather than forcing it. Broken glass is expensive, as established above.

If the globe won't budge, don't pry it. The fixture could be painted over, or the collar corroded, or the design requires disassembling the canopy first. That's when you call an electrician. A $150 service call is a lot cheaper than a new fixture.

Why Does Lighting Quality Matter in Photos and Social Media?

This is the question we didn't get in 2019, and now we get it all the time: does our lighting affect how our space looks on social media? And the answer is yes—in ways that are hard to ignore if you're in hospitality or retail.

High-CRI (Color Rendering Index) light—CRI 90 or above—renders colors accurately. That makes food look appetizing, skin tones look natural, and spaces look cleaner and more welcoming in a photo shot on a phone. At CRI 80, the baseline for much commercial LED, colors can look a little flat. At lower CRI, skin can take on an odd green tint, and it shows up on social media.

When we upgraded one property's lobby from CRI 80 to CRI 92 in late 2023, the hotel's own phone photos started looking noticeably better. Is that a scientific metric? Not exactly. But the staff stopped re-taking photos, and more guests seemed to tag the hotel in their posts, including some Snapchat Spotlight videos. Nobody's ever complained that our lighting made their food look unappetizing. That's not nothing.

From a cost standpoint, CRI 90 fixtures are no longer a luxury line item—in our recent bids, the premium over CRI 80 has been small enough that it rarely drives the decision. And if you compare that premium to what you'd spend on professional photography or paid social promotion, it's an easy call. We've also started layering in smart lighting controls, so a space can shift from a crisp, bright daytime mode to a warmer, lower-level evening look automatically. That's less about technology for technology's sake, and more about having the right light for the right moment without constant fiddling.
